First edition; illustrated with six black and white photographs. All of the material in this book except the Preface originally appeared in the New Yorker. A presentation copy, inscribed: To darling Bill, with dependence, admiration, appreciation and love – Janet/March 1, 1957. “Bill” is William Shawn, Flanner’s longtime friend and editor at the New Yorker. As the inscription suggests, Flanner and Shawn enjoyed a nurturing and productive relationship.
