Signed by Elizabeth Blackwell on the first blank, E. Blackwell, and passed on to her niece, Katharine Barry, who initialed beneath her aunt’s name, K.B. With Barry’s personal card – “Miss Katharine Barry, Rock House, Exmouth Place, Hastings” – on the front pastedown.
Fuller opens this translation of the fictitious correspondence between Bettina Brentano and Caroline Günderode with both a Translator’s Preface and an excerpt from her article in the Dial entitled “Bettina Brentano and her friend Günderode” (volume II, 1842, pp. 313-57). The complete Dial article contains translations of a few letters not published elsewhere. Of Günderode’s poem and other texts included in the correspondence, this number contains the following: Manes; Apocalyptical fragment; Change and constancy; Immortalita; and selections of Dartula in German and English.
Despite publisher Elizabeth Palmer Peabody’s subscription notice inside the front cover, announcing this as the first of four numbers of her “paper,” those never appeared; the translation of Günderode was later completed by Mrs. Wesselhoeft in her anonymous edition of the Correspondence of Fräulein Günderode and Bettine von Arnim (Boston 1861).
