Broadside: Ours is a government 'of the people, by the people, and for the people,' or it is not."

Empire State Campaign Commit-tee. Flyer: "Ours is a government ‘of the people, by the people, and for the people,’ or it is not." New York: Empire State Campaign Committee, [1915].

Flyer: 5-1/4 x 7-1/2"; printed on light green stock; illustrated with a cartoon by Art Young; some tanning; very good.

Arthur ("Art") Young (1866-1943) worked as a cartoonist for the Chicago Evening Mail and the Chicago Inter-Ocean and also contributed to The Masses. The handbill makes the salient point that women are people and anti-suffragists can make no argument as to why they should be denied the vote. Suffrage broadsides seldom used illustrations; obviously, suffragists thought Art Young’s cartoon singularly effective. Sheppard, Alice, Cartooning For Suffrage, p. 228.
